Summer 2012 Civil War Blog Post

In studying the Civil War, one often wonders if there are any divisive issues today that could threaten the union of our country much like that of slavery in the 1800's.Identify at least 3 issues you think might be dividing Americans today, and explain why you think so in a paragraph of 3-5 sentences for each. Comment to two students on the issues they chose and whether or not you agree with their opinion.

I think one major issue that could have split up America is Money. Because back then people were dependent on the government for food stamps and Welfare. I think this was the governments issue because the government gives food stamps and welfare out way to anyone and will support them for a really long time too. So by the government doing so the people rely on the government for their daily needs. This really make me fell up sit because I have to work for my things and pay for them while the government just gives it away to the people.

Another issue I have is about our rights as United States citizens because you have no rights intill your in court. What I mean about that is in normal life you go by with out you rights but if you do something bad and you go to jail the government can't do anything because the person will use every thing to his side so the government cant talk to him because he will use all the rights he can to get out of it. I think thats not right and if you do something bad or just stupid you should have all your rights taken away from you.

The last issue I have is about the laws. I think the laws a missed up because you see people that kill many people and they are put in jail for 25 years and then they get out and can do it again. I also think jails are missed up because it like a free place to live and you get free health insurance. The free place to live makes me made because thats were most of the tax money goes to support these people who have an easy life behind bar. Also when I said free health Insurance it is truly free because if your hurt they must get you well before you go to jail. For example last year some man went to a bank and held it up by giving the cashier a note saying this is a robbery and all i want is $1 then he got the money and sat on the bench and waited for the police to take him to jail because he need to have a surgery so by him going to jail they had to give him the surgery because he was in jail. That makes me mad because he used the system to get free health care.

There are many issues dividing America today but the three I am going to discuss are abortion, gay marriage, and immigration.

Anytime the word abortion is brought up, you know there will be a disagreement over it. On one side there are the people who believe that it’s okay to have an abortion because they baby is not born yet. Then there are people who believe that it is morally wrong to kill anybody, unborn or not. Although it is a very touchy subject for many, it continues to cause major debates worldwide.

The next issue I will discuss is gay marriages. In many states, governments are beginning to allow gay marriages which are beginning to cause much controversy. Some believe that marriage should be between only a man and a woman. Others believe that people should be able to marry whoever they want regardless of their gender.

Finally, the issue of immigration is splitting the nation. On one side, people believe that immigrants are taking all the money and all the jobs that available. They believe that with immigrants coming in, there won’t be jobs available for them. On the other hand, people think that if an immigrant wants to come to the US in search of a better life then we should let them. Laws such as the Dream Act have been passed recently allowing people eligible to be able to receive an education even if they are not a citizen of the US.

Jaclyn Juarez said...

Ashley- I agree with you when you say that money is dividing Americans. There’s a widening gap between the rich and the poor and it just keeps getting bigger. Like you said, despite the fact that the poor work hard, their jobs are barely paying enough for them to survive.

Kali- I agree with you because I believe that immigrants come to the US in search of a better life, not to take all the job opportunities. That is why it warms my heart to see things like the Dream Act being passed.

One issue that I think is dividing Americans today is homosexuality. A lot of people are for and against it which makes people spit up in my opinion. People are say it wrong due to their beliefs whether it is against their religion, they think it is un natural, or its against evolution, and so many more reasons. While people who are homosexual and or supporters think its right or fine with their beliefs which are that they were born with it, that they can’t hide their feelings, that its part of life, and more. And with these conflicting behaviors those people start to hate each other due to their beliefs causing a disruption in the US. Oh and with the hatred came with the rights of Homosexuals and they the freedom they aren’t getting to live as they please so that would also cause a spit. Thus making people of their different beliefs of homosexuals to split up and divide America into two separate groups, the Homosexuals and their supporters and the anti-homosexuals.
Another issue I think is dividing Americans is the issue of Politics and the Republicans and Democrats party which has been an ongoing conflict for a while now. But I think it is getting pretty bad now due to all the media and how our government and economy is today. A lot of blame is being put on each other on why the government and the economy are so bad today. This led to debates on which type of party the president should be to try to fix what’s going on. And the democrats and the republicans have a lot of animosity between each other due to their beliefs and what not. Now in modern times I feel that this animosity has been a lot worse and even more violent due to the recent events happening in America today, everyone is blaming each other for what is going on. And I think all this hatred between the republicans and the democrats is dividing America today.
The final issue that I think is dividing America today is the issue of government help such as the use of healthcare and food stamps. People are arguing about this because some people feel that with this much help from the government we are starting to lean towards a Communistic government. In which The US has been about being a Republic type of government and we have tried to get away from Communism. While the others argue about how we aren’t turning into a Communist government and that the people in need should get their benefits. The people who are against it also have other reasoning that is wrong because they feel that people need to work like everyone else to provide for them if they want this stuff. While others feel that they need this to benefit them because they can’t afford it due to their low income. So these people have different beliefs on the government supporting people and how its right or wrong. And because of these reasoning’s this is causing a lot of disruption and hatred between these people which would lead me to believe that they would want to separate due to their beliefs.

Vanessa R. said...

Andy Zeek- I really like your response, but I think you read the prompt wrong. I think you should have gave reasoning on why the issues are causing America to divide while giving both sides to the argument. But other than that I do agree on your issues especially on the issue of money and how the government is giving people benefits that cost which is causing the US to divide. I feel that its probley the the main reason on the division.

Jaclyn Juarez- I do agree with all of your reasoning and I think they are all really good issue that is causing division among the US. And wouldn't have though that abortion would be a big conflict but now that I think about it, it really is. I do think that you could have explain the issues a little more in depth. But other than that no complaints. Excellent job on the response!

Among Americans throughout the nation there are countless problems; however most of these are not intense enough to divide the country and cause another Civil War. If I had to list three problems that could potentially threaten the union of today, I would say immigration, gay rights and health care. As an occupant of Arizona I am always hearing issues about immigration. I have heard arguements from people wanting stricter border enforcement and from people wanting more humanitarian treatment of illegal aliens. I think immigration causes division across the nation because it's not just an issue in Arizona but all along the Southern states and even up North along the Canadian border. The next issue that came to mind was gay rights. This issue is brought up all the time including on the news, in debates, and throughout the community. Individual states control whther couples in a same sex relationship can get married or not. Tention is always brought when discussing what rights they should or should not have. The final conflict I've noticed is the Health Care Bill. The controversey over this is that certain people think the bill is unconstitutional because they say the government is forcing them to buy something. One side says it's a benefit for everyone while the other doesn't think the government should be able to mandate the purchase of health care. There was such a big uproar over the passing of this bill that people took it to the Supreme Court. These were the three key issues that i thought brought division into the United States. Nevertheless there are many more issues that have yet to be solved.

Andy- Although I share some of the same views as you I think you're forgetting about all the innocent people that have wrongly been put in jail. I'm not sure how often people are wrongly accused but it does happen. Imagine if you were framed and put in jail, wouldn't you want some basic rights? I just think a lot of issues have two sides because there's always a grey area.

Vanessa- I enjoyed reading your comments on the parties because I was tempted to write about the presidential elcetion and political debates in my response. I was going to say that all of these issues are huge reasons of why people vote for one canidate and don't vote for another. If a canidate believes in something that a voter does not it can change who the voter places their vote for. With everybody voting for who shares the closet beliefs with themselves it influences the outocme of elections.

Three issues that might be dividing America today that are big enough to make the Americas split into different republics are the issue of gay marriage, war of no war, and government laws.

One reason I think that gay marriage is such a big issue is because of the growing gay population. Also the people against go marriage are such radical extremes that it divides the gap pretty big. I think that is possible for this to start a revolt in some parts of the country and possibly get part of the country such as a state to separate from the United States.

Another issue that I could see causing a state to break away from America is the issue of the war, many Americans don’t believe in the war. Most people want to get our troops out. Also there are the people who have people in the army who support it and want to help. It is very big issue in my opinion and could possibly make people revolt.

The last thing that I think could cause a revolt to cause America to divide and this is the biggest issue I think it is the government and its law. Such as the laws on medical marijuana a lot of the country is divided on this subject. Also the government was very split about healthcare and some people were for while some were against if all the people realized they could start a new nation and change these laws then they might try to separate from American and form there own union.

Unknown said...

Vanessa R. - I didn't even think about the political policies but that is a very good point and is very possible because half of the country is democratic and the other half is republic so it is a very possible chance.

Cee po- I said two of the things you noted and i think that you are very right in the way that no single subject is strong enough to divide up such a strong union like the United States and even if it was big enough the government wouldn't let it happen/

Three issues that might be dividing Americans today are the issues of gay marriage, health care, and money.

The first issue that is dividing Americans today is gay marriage. The people who favor same-sex marriage claim to recognize it as marriage equality. They also want and support legal recognition for this type of marriage. The other side of this issue are the people who do not favor same-sex marriage. These people believe that gay marriage should not be allowed because it is not good for the kids and it is degrading the whole definition of marriage. This issue continues to divide Americans as it becomes more common in modern days.

The next issue that divides Americans is health care. The usual split in this case is between Democrats and Republicans, each wanting something completely different. Democrats want to cover the uninsured Americans, extend support of preventative health programs and cover chronic health conditions. Republicans on the other hand, want no additional taxes to go to health care programs. I think that this issue is not one that will be solved any time soon due to the fact that both parties have completely contrasting views on the subject.

The last issue that seems to be dividing Americans is money, which creates different social classes. Many people depend on the government to survive, whether its from food stamps or welfare systems. While these people depend on the government, most Americans work for what they have and earn it instead of relying on the government. Also, with this money issue, comes the issue of social classes. There is the “higher” class of people who have good-paying jobs and who work hard. Then there is a “lower” class of people who may work hard but do not have a good-paying job. Although I would like to say there should not be social classes, it is something that will always exist in such a nation as ours.

Ashley said...

I agree with Andy Zeek because I do think money has split up Americans. I think that the government should help people that are truly in need of help but only for a short time just to get them back on their feet. I definitely agree with you when you said you feel upset because you have to work for what you have. That makes me angry as well because my family and I work very hard for what we have and own while the government gives people their things because they don't have a job.

I agree with Rozhan Mokri also on the fact that gay marriage is splitting Americans. Although, I have a different view on gay marriages. I think gay marriage should not be allowed or legalized at all. We were put on this earth to “multiply and replenish the earth” and with gay marriages, that is physically impossible. I also believe that legalizing such a thing degrades the actually meaning of marriage, which is a union between one man and one woman.

I full hardheartedly believe that the main reason we would crumble as a country is based on money. Money is a huge reason we fight with each other and other countries on a general basis. Also we have welfare and food stamps, which are ridiculous because they last a life time and that is UN-needed. They should be used as a pick-me-up for when people make mistakes and are trying to fix that mistake, not for lazy people would just don’t want to get a job! At in end of 2011 we as a country were in dept. 15 trillion dollars, which is going to makes us come crumbling down because we keep borrowing money when we don’t have it to pay back.
Another reason we might split as a country is based on social opinion like abortion or gay marriage for example. Everyone is inclined to their own opinion, it even says so in our Declaration of Independence but not everyone believes that. Weather someone wants to spend their life with a man or women is not anyone business but that one person, and who are we to judge someone based on their sexual preference; he could be the greatest man that ever walked this earth. Abortion is a huge issue as well, I believe in them because if a women gets raped and that man gets her pregnant from his crime, she should not have to keep it if she choices not to. Government has no right to tell neither me nor any other women what we can and cannot do with our bodies. We are capable of making decision on our own and we should allow other people to do so, because if we don’t our country will turn on itself.
Additionally religion is a major conservancy that is what most wars are fought over. How sad is it that we are so judgmental over each other and their ways of life we are willing to kill over it, it’s pathetic. I believe if we let people believe in what they want, never trying to convert another to their religion and just allow people to believe in whatever they like and not talk about it to others this country would improve tremendously. I don’t care whether my neighbor is a Christian or my trainer is Jewish, every religion is wonderful and if we open our mind to that it would be one less thing to fight about, therefore putting America on the right track again.

There are many factors that contribute to the division of America these days. Three main reasons are; the economy, immigration, and gay marriage.

The first reason for divison of Americans is the economy. Over the past few years American have lost their job, and now can not find a replacement. Due to the loss in jobs, citizens are not receiving close to the ammount of money they were when they had a job. As a result, bankrupsy on houses and just getting by day after day has become difficult. Also, due to the fact money has become an issue, social classes have become a factor that divide Americans. The wealthy still live in nice houses and are not affected by the economy, while the poor are stuggling and trying to get by. These fators listed above are reasons for American division.

Immigration is another reason for division of Americans. Mexican citizens are known for sneaking into states such as California and Arizona. As a result, many Americans feel they take job opportunities, and have no reason for being in their state. This causes division because there is a group of American citizens that are trying to keep Mexicans out of their state. When all the Mexican citizens want to do is create a change or a good life for their families.

Finally, gay marriage is a major reason why Americans are dividing. For example, there is the point of view where gay marriage is not any harm. Where they feel that it is just like any other marriage and it does not harm anyone. On the other hand, some feel that it will cause problems for society and their families. For example, some see it as disturbing, unecessary, and will judge them just because they are marrying the sam sex. This has caused division because you have two sides of citizens that will harshly defend their position on the belief of same sex marriage.

PS: I had this on the spring blog, but it was on time I just didn't notice a summer one was created!

Andy- I agree with your statement on how the laws divide Americans. I feel the same way about the fact that jails are a free place to live and once they get out they can do anything again. It was ver clever on how you put that paragraph together and i feel it is a very important issue that many ignore.

Ashley- I agree with your statement on how health care has caused division of Americans. It is a very important issue because there are two sides to the topic that will defend their position unti they get the result they want

Unknown said...

Ashley- I like how you brought up the gay marriage factor. Going off of that I think the people of the United States should have the right to marry what ever sex they want too. I think that is wrong that if the people want gay marriage they have to leave the country to get married.

Rozhan Mokri- I liked how you listed the economy as one of the three things. One reason the economy is very importan because the world goes around and around with the economy. But lets say are economy crashed more then now the world would be effected big time and thousand even millions of people would have no money it it would be not good. Now lets say the economy 2005 was the highest it every was it was the good life. If that was still today our lifes would be completely different because there would be way more people with jobs and alot of the country's would not fall failed. So the economy effects the world.

In studying the Civil War, one often wonders if there are any divisive issues today that could threaten the union of our country much like that of slavery in the 1800's. Identify at least 3 issues you think might be dividing Americans today, and explain why you think so in a paragraph of 3-5 sentences for each.

Although a split in the United States today is extremely unlikely, if this were to occur there are several recurring issues in today's society that may be the cause. Among these issues, the most prominent are illegal immigration, welfare, and gay marriage.
Ever since the drug cartels came to influence the Mexican government, there has been an influx of Mexican immigrants in the United States. This in its self is not a problem, however, the fact that a large percentage of these immigrants are illegal has led to much controversy between the Republican and Democratic parties. The Republicans believe that the illegals should not be allowed to stay in the U.S., because they are unable to pay taxes and because they take up jobs and medical care that they believe should be reserved for U.S. citizens. The Democrats, on the other hand, feel that the illegals- most of whom seem to be families hoping to escape the corruption of the Mexican government- should be allowed to stay in the U.S. as long as they work, which most seem willing to do. This topic has been the cause of much discord between the two parties, especially after Senate Bill SP 1070- recently confirmed to be constitutional- was passed in Arizona. This allows policemen and women, who have reasonable suspicion that someone is illegal, to check their identification, so as to receive proof of their citizenship. Democrats, however, are outraged and believe that this will lead to racial discrimination against Hispanic people in the U.S. If this issue were to lead to a split in the U.S., the Democratic states would probably ban together to form one side which would allow illegal immigration, while the Republican sates would form the other side which would not allow illegal immigration.
Another major source of disagreement in the U.S. is the welfare system. While this system- which provides money, food, and shelter to people who are unable to support themselves- is greatly beneficial to those who truly need it, many believe that it is being greatly misused. Once again this argument pits Republicans against Democrats. Democrats believe that the welfare system is a necessary measure in order to reduce poverty and starvation within the U.S. Republicans believe that people who do not need welfare are taking advantage of it, thus unfairly taking money from tax payers. Currently, welfare is available in all states, however, if this issue were to escalate, it is possible that some states may heighten the restrictions on those who are eligible to receive it, thus causing a division between the States.
Finally, a topic that has already begun to cause a division in the United States, is Gay marriage. Recently New York, California, and other states have legalized gay marriage while others remain defiantly against it. Those against it are usually people who uphold certain religious beliefs that forbid homosexuality, and therefore see gay marriage as immoral. Those who are for it believe that, although some religions forbid homosexuality, U.S. citizens are given freedom of religion and, therefore, are not bond to follow the principles of any one religion. If more states legalize gay marriage, it is likely that the United Sated will be divided into two distinct groups.

I agree with Ashley, health care is a conservancy all in it's own. Because it is given to some and not others, based on money which is understandable but if someone needs it we should be there to help.

I also agree with Andy, i as well think money is our biggest issue our country faces and until we do something about it our country will start to fall continuously.

America has many issues and problems that could possibly cause America to divide. Three of them just so happen to be the economy, border complictions, and gay marriage. When discussing the topic of the economy one would agree that it causes many confrintations between people. It can be argued that the economy has fallen because of our government and ther particular choices. It's not out of the ordinary for you to hear about someone loosing their house, job, not being able to find work, or find a way to pay for bills either. Of course this is a huge problem for America because without an economy then our nation is not stable. Then approaching border complications their has been any conflicts when expressing the rights or rules for that. Many people feel that our borders should be more controlled and should be secured. Immigrants tend to feel that America is free. However, rights should be followed legally and not illegally like most immigrants think. It's obvious that it causes problems because then once borders are controlled then people that want to come into the U.S. ge angry and don't fathem the reasning behind it. Lastly, gay marriage is something that America has evolved into. This is a topic that is based off what individuals believe. It brings upon many contoversy amongst the people. Just like any argument one has their beleifs and morals and the other has what they beleive.

Unknown said...

Kali- I also agree that the economy has a big impact on people living in America. So many people have lost their jobs or homes due to the fact that the economy is struggling. I also liked your reasoning for the topic of gay marriage. For some reason people tend to make it huge conflict which then makes it a reason for America to split considering it's becoming so common these days.

Andre- I thought how you said that war was a reason for the possibility of America splitting could be a factor. War is considered a major impact on one's nation and certainly our nation. Like everything war is always a dispute among people and it's something that is either supported or not.

One reason Americans might divide would simply be the differences in political parties. As time goes on the arguments between the two parties grow larger and hostilities increase. The two parties absolutely cannot find a common ground between them and the crater separating them continues to increase. Members of the two parties have been known to get into bitter fights and I'm sure more than one life has been lost in a political argument between members. There is almost nothing that the parties agree on and it is tearing a hole in the government and politics in general. It is very possible that it could split the states up into Democratic and Republican states, though some are already much like this.
Another splitting issue would be the large gap between rich and poor. While the rich seem to only get richer and never share the poor are often ending up on the streets with nothing. While the rich usually earned their money honestly it strikes a sort of hatred in the hearts of those who do not have a lot of money. The rich think they deserve every cent of their money while the poor grow more and more bitter. Eventually the two classes may get fed up and split.
The last reason would be outer religion and politics mixed together. Some believe the religion is always supposed to be a part of everything while others believe that church and state should never come together. Eventually the majorly religious people and those who do not think religion should be involved in politics will start to fight more harshly.

Unknown said...

Kali Morris- I completely agree with all of your reasons, especially gay marriage. It is a HUGE issue in today's society and it is constantly argued about all over. It has been splitting people all over the country ever since being gay became a public thing.

Ashley- I agree that money is a huge issues and as time goes on the gap between rich and poor will only get larger.

American has many problems and some we can fix and some we can’t , but it doesn’t mean we can try. These past few years there has been a problem with illegal immigrants coming to live in the United States. I was born into this life style without a problem and you can say that I was given my citizenship for free as well with several others. Immigrants work so hard to help their families and make a better living for themselves and would kill to be a part of this country. And they deserve to be. They are doing no harm. As for others I may consider my thoughts, but for those who are hardworking I believe they need a second chance. Gay marriage is another issue is gay marriage. Everyone should have the right to love whoever they want. It is not a disease or illness and people have to respect them. Lately society has made it seem that if you are gay you are not allowed in the church because it is against God’s will and it’s a sin. God did mention that love should be between a man and a woman, but God loves everyone no matter who they are or what they’ve done. It has also resulted in bulling and in suicide. No one should ever suffer for who they love. This is a situation that America is going to have to learn to accept. Teen pregnancy is another issue. Apparently it’s the latest trend. The rates have been getting higher lately and it doesn’t just affect the parent’s life, but also the baby. Parents should be able to educate their kids about having safe sex and also talk about some of the consequences that could come behind it. Being pregnant as a teen could result in losing or delaying on your education. A big problem that comes behind this is not being able to support the kid. If you can’t support your child adoption could be an option for those who have considered it. The child should not have to suffer because their parent wasn’t ready. These are issues that America is dealing with today.

Immigration is the first major issue that is splitting America. There are many immigrants that come to our country illegally and don't have the same responsibilities as American citizens. For instance, they don't have to pay taxes or medical insurance. They recieve financial assistance from the State and Federal government. Many American citizens are frustrated by this because they are expected to abide by the law.

The next issue dividing America is homosexuality. The people that don't support it choose to not affiliate with those that do support it. This causes a large split in society. Those that do support it feel like they don't have the same freedom and rights. For example, gay marriage is illegal and not accepted is most states. This can create alot of tension between the two sides. Also, many religious people believe that homosexuality goes against the religious beliefs as written in the bible.

The final issue is religion in schools. Many people believe that religion is slowly being taken out of our school systems. For example, schools are trying to get rid of "Under God" in the Pledge of Allegiance. Many religious people do not agree with this. They believe that this is what the country was founded upon. The other side of it is that people don't want religion to be forced upon students. They might believe in Darwins Theory of Evolution.

Unknown said...

Hespera- I agree with what you said about immigration. I like how you brought up the Republican and Democratic parties. I did not think of that before.

Kali-I agree with what you said about gay marrage. I agree with what you said about the split. Many feel that it does not harm anyone while others feel that it causes problems they dislike it.

Unknown said...

One of the main issues today seperating Americans is sexuality. Just like the times when african-americans were fighting for their rights and when women did the same, America is prosecuting homosexuals simply for being different. Now you have an America that is trying to give rights to this group of people while others are fighting to keep things they used to be and continue to try and rrestrict the rights of people with different sexualities.

The second issue in America today that seperates so many of us is still the issue of race. Even though rights have been one for the minorities of America, their is still some resentment and plenty of rascism still around. So many people don't want to let go of old ideals and outdated beliefes of white people being superior and can't accept that all humans are seen as equal in America.

The last issue in America that seperates most people is physical appearance. So many people in America seer themselves as better than others simply because they look better or are skinnier and they create this bitternees between those who are not as attractive as themselves.

Hespera Purdin said...

James- I really liked the topics that you chose; they were very eye-opening and I can tell that you put some thought into them. First of all, I completely agree with you in regards to gay marriage. It seems like every day this subject is causing more separation between the two political groups, especially when ridiculous notions, such as that gay couples aren't fit to raise children, are brought up. I also agree with you that racism is still a problem, however, I'd just like to say that it's not always against minorities. Many colleges are giving out scholarships to minorities for simply being minorities, which in a way is racist, as it excludes white people. Also, on a personal level, I attended a middle school in which the student population was only around 20% white, and I was actually subject to racist remarks every now and then. It's definitely nothing to compare to the racism against black people and other races that has occurred throughout history, but racism can also be against white people, not just by them. As for the topic of looks, I agree and think the today's media is to blame. They are constantly influencing young people through commercials and adds that practically brain-wash them into believing that all girls have to be supermodel-skinny and that all boys have to have a six pack.

Gavin- I absolutely agree that Religion is starting to cause division; however, if everyone would simply abide by the constitution, it wouldn't have to. It say's "freedom OF religion" not "freedom FROM religion". That's why I think that the idea of excluding "God" from the national anthem is ridiculous. If someone doesn't believe in God, that's completely fine, and I respect their beliefs; however, I don't think that those who DO believe in God or uphold any other religious beliefs should have to hide it, so as to avoid offending anyone. Everyone should just live and let live and respect other people's beliefs.

I think one huge issue in this country is moeny. I think it is money becasue people are starting to think money can replace happinesss and love and all it can do is buy you materialistic objects, I mean sure it makes you happy for the spur of the moment but what about after? I also agree with Andy Zeek, how come some of us have to work for our money while others are handed it becasue they have a rich fmily or the government pays them because they "can't get a job?" I think the people of this country will start to get roudy and angry with the fact that even though the government is in debt they are still igving away money.
Another issue i believe is forming in this country is the dispute about gay marriage. The dispute going on here is that it is allowed but at the same time it isn't allowed. As Jaclyn Juarez says some people say marriage is suppose to be through one man and one women, but if that is so why then are they allowed to date, or be in a relationshhip with one and another. Why are they allowed to date in this country but arent allowed to get married?
My final issue i think that will cause some problems in America is the Democratics vs. the Republicans. These two political stances are taken very seriously and very diffrently. The problem here is that if you are a part of one you can't really be a part of the other either. I mean honestly if we are called the United States of America, why can't we act like one unity?

There are an incredible amount of reasons why Americans are dividing today, unfortunately. Three are; the economy, social classes, and gay marriage. The horrible economy has affected half or even more of Americans. So many have lost their jobs, houses, and had to go places they probably never imagined.
The people are dividing from one another due to the amount of money one makes. The economy threw the people out of living basically, and without a job, it wouldn’t be easy to always eat what you want or buy the clothes you always wanted to. All the people that are being divided from others is because the people with less amounts of money are needing to find places which are cheaper to live in. the people with more money get to live in the areas with nicer housing.

Another issue that is dividing Americans is the different social classes, the rich, middle class and poor, just those titles have separated people. The rich obviously live in nice, huge homes, with very nice cars and eat and wear whatever that catches their eyes. Being rich sometimes changes the person’s personality and how they treat people with less money than them because they know they are rich. The middle class are the ones who sometimes buy what they desire but not too much of it and eat right and have affordable cars. The poor on the other hand, are the ones who do not have much, and have to try hard to get what is there not too much of it. People judge a lot on the way one looks, by the car they drive, or the house they live in. this is a horrible issue, that humans judge one another so much, and it’s unbelievable.

Lastly, the last issue that is dividing Americans is the marriage of the same sexes, this makes no sense because people are people, and they should be able to choose to do what they want, it’s not like their committing a murder or something. Therefore, there is no reason to treat them different then you would treat any other person, because treating them different is dividing us Americans apart. Americans also do not share their voices often, odd because we live in a free country, and if we were to speak out more, there wouldn’t be so much distance from one another.

@Andy Zeek.
I agree with you on the laws are an issue because I have seen so many cases where one person kills another and they do not get that much of a punishment. I didn’t know you get free health insurance in jail, that’s an interesting fact. Also, that is a crazy story, that’s crazy how when one is to go to jail they have to be healthy first, wow. Lastly, I also hate how some of the taxes we pay go to the ones going into jail. However, I don’t see how this divides Americans overall?

@Ashley
I completely agree with you that health care is one way that is splitting Americans up greatly. Since there are democrats and republicans and as you said they both want different things. I see how democrats want everyone to be covered by insurance like Obama said. However, republicans do not want that, and that is why they are splitting. However, being insured is good for anyone's own good (in my opinion) because they are then able to go to the doctor whenever and won’t have to pay thousands of dollars.

I believe there are a few ways in which our nation could be divided.

The first of these is religion. While there is a freedom to express and practice whatever religion one believes in here in the U.S., the rivalry and estranged relationships between some of these religions may be enough to break apart sections of our nation.

Another possible factor is politics. We still have Republicans and Democrats and while they may be at peace with the government as a whole for now, who knows what kind of argument the two parties could get into in the future? There's a possibility that this argument could break apart out nation once again.

The last is, as silly as it seems, gay rights. Think about it for a moment; in some respect, there are plenty of people who look upon homosexuals, or anyone that isn't straight in sexuality, in a disapproving way. Those against them use the Holy Bible and myths and religion to justify their cause in denying homosexuals rights. Then there are those that support the rights. They are at odds with those against because they find their reasoning to be foolish. The rift between them could get deeper at any moment and eventually cause parts of the nation to be at odds with each other. Those are just the few reasons I came up with.

@Andy Zeek, replying to your comment on my post:
I agree with you that the world goes around with the economy, it basically controls everyone. If the economy crashed more than it already has, then I wouldn’t even want to imagine how horrible living conditions would be, especially for the poor. I agree that if the economy was different and better, than our lives would be much easier.
